Never Give Up: Evan’s Story
After Evan stopped responding to his name at 14 months old, his mother, Sopheap, knew something was wrong.

Her suspicions increased when Evan began tossing his head backward erratically. “One night he flipped it back so hard, he knocked me in the eye,” recalls Sopheap. Panicked, she phoned the doctor. Although told there was a nearly two-year waitlist, Sopheap’s persistence landed an earlier appointment. The diagnosis was shocking: Evan had autism.

Today, because of Goodwill of Orange County’s ATEC and Sopheap’s ‘never-give-up’ attitude, Evan’s communication skills have vastly improved. “It's night and day,” his mom says. “Goodwill is such a good resource. I know for sure without the device Evan would still be struggling.”
